India’s radiologist shortage is a teleradiology opportunity
In India, there's a severe shortage of radiologists, with only around 10,000 radiologists for a population of 1.4 billion. That's just one radiologist per 140,000 people. Even worse, 75% of these are concentrated in urban areas. As a result, the rural patients often have to travel long distances or wait extended periods for getting their reports analysed by radiologists.
Even if just 1% of India's population needs a radiology test each year, that's a staggering 14 million tests! Moreover, if 50% of these tests are in rural areas, with each patient spending an average of ₹1,000 on travel and expenses, that's a whopping ₹7,000 crore ($910 million) in annual rural patient spend ready for access!!
This is where the business opportunity for today lies! Imagine a platform that connects diagnostic centers with a network of radiologists. The software would allow secure uploading radiology images, as well as seamless reporting and delivery of results. One doesn't even need to build this software to start the telereporting business. There is also an opportunity to build a service based company where we build a network of radiologists to provide remote radiology reporting services!
Let's work out some numbers. With a network of just 100 radiologists, each reporting an average of 10 cases per day at ₹500 ($6.50) per report, the annual revenue potential is 10 * 100 * 500 * 365 = 18 Crores = $2.2 Million!
By 2030, India aims to increase its doctor-to-patient ratio from 1:1,400 to 1:1,000. If you're passionate about healthcare and technology, teleradiology is an opportunity you simply can't miss! Did this opportunity excite you? Who is building in this space?
